About this book
Railways, waterways and widely separated provinces frame Agnes C. Laut's account of Canada's national growth. Published in 1909, this historical narrative presents Confederation as the task of joining settlements with different languages, customs and economic interests. Laut connects that political union with the expense and effort of building transport links across the country. Her introduction also records the hopes attached to Canada's future, giving the reader a view of national ambition at the beginning of the twentieth century.
The narrative turns historical events into scenes of physical effort and military conflict. In the account of the siege of Louisburg, men drag cannon across difficult ground, illness weakens the attacking force, and ships and shore batteries shape the contest. Readers interested in Canadian history can follow the practical pressures behind these episodes while considering Laut's emphasis on imperial growth and heroic achievement.
