About this book
The Cariboo Trail, described as A Chronicle of the Gold-fields of British Columbia, is by Agnes C. Laut. The contents list names chapters called The Argonauts, The Prospector, Cariboo and The Overlanders, among others. The text says precipice, rapids, avalanche and winter storm take their toll of dead.
The text says that when everybody has forgotten about it, a shaggy man comes out of the wilds with a leather bag, the bag goes to the mint, and the world goes mad. Vancouver Island, with New Caledonia, was practically a fief of the Hudson's Bay Company though nominally a crown colony, and James Douglas was governor. A rare glamour lies over the plains that June, where the unfenced prairie billows to the horizon a sea of green and game is superabundant. A note says that on the prospector's daily life there is no book, and that it must be learned from him on the trail.
