About this book
From settlements beside Annapolis and Quebec to a union reaching across the continent, John George Bourinot follows the growth of the Canadian Dominion. His history gives substantial space to the French colonial period while tracing changes in government and public life under English rule. The preface sets out his interest in leading public figures, representative institutions and French Canadian customs. Revisions and additional chapters extend the account in the edition dated 1922.
Military campaigns provide another thread. Bourinot describes Montcalm's successes at Oswego and Fort William Henry, the unsuccessful plans against Louisbourg, and Pitt's return to office. He links these events to the decisions of commanders and political leaders on both sides of the Atlantic. For readers studying Canadian history, the book offers a broad account of settlement and Confederation alongside an older historian's explanations of how institutions shaped national development.
