About this book
The Winning of Popular Government is described as A Chronicle of the Union of 1841, by Archibald MacMechan. The contents list names, among others, chapters titled Durham the Dictator, Reform in the Saddle and The Principle Established. Lord Durham received his commission in March 1838, and Durham sailed from Plymouth in H.M.S. Hastings with a party of twenty-two persons on the twenty-fourth of April.
The text says only at the price of their religious principles could the dissenters of Nova Scotia obtain the boon of higher education. In Upper Canada, another privileged King's College, exclusively Anglican, was founded early in the nineteenth century and richly endowed with public lands. One illustration is captioned Burning of the Parliament Buildings, Montreal, 1849, from a colour drawing by C. W. Jefferys.
