About this book
Caribbee is a book by Thomas Hoover set in Barbados in 1648. The book's own description says English colonists pen a Declaration of Defiance against Parliament and fight a full-scale war for freedom against an English fleet, over a century before 1776. The text describes the Caribbean it shows as a dumping ground for outcasts and adventurers from many nations, a cockpit of violence, greed, drunkenness, piracy, and voodoo. The text says the men and women in the story include many actual and composite individuals, and that time has been compressed somewhat to allow a continuous narrative.
A section headed The Caribbean 1638 describes men with six canoes in all, wide tree trunks hollowed out by burning away the heart. An afterword says many episodes in the novel are fictionalized renderings of actual events, albeit condensed, and that the majority of individuals depicted also were drawn from life.
