About this book
Maori and Settler, subtitled A Story of The New Zealand War, is by G. A. Henty, author of Redskin and Cowboy, In Freedom's Cause and Bonnie Prince Charlie. The text says that the Renshaw family's neighbours and acquaintances showed great sympathy when it was heard that their whole fortune was swept away by the failure of the bank. Mrs. Renshaw hints that it is probable they would go abroad, while Wilfrid and Marion both inform their friends confidently that they are going to New Zealand.
A speaker says that you can keep vastly larger herds by paying a small sum to the natives for the right of grazing your cattle on their unoccupied ground, since they cultivate a mere fraction of the land. The text says that Colonel Whitmore, having finally completely subdued the Hau-Hau tribes in the north of Wellington and Taranaki, had marched with a strong force divided into four columns.
