About this book
Carriages & Coaches, by Ralph Straus, traces the history and evolution of carriages and coaches, fully illustrated with reproductions from old prints, contemporary drawings and photographs. The contents list chapters on the primitive vehicle, the age of litters, the introduction of the coach and the interlude of the chair.
The text says that precious metals, according to the legend, were used for the chariots of the gods, and quotes lines on Juno’s car with eight brazen spokes in radiant order. The text says that though the Lydians used chariots with two or even three poles, the Greeks never had more than one. An advertisement quoted in the text says that coaches are so hung as to render them easier for the passenger and less labour for the horses, and that hackney and stage coachmen may have licences from the Patentees, Mr. John Green and Mr. William Dockwra.
