About this book
The History of Coaches is a book by George Athelstane Thrupp. The text says the history of the art of Coachmaking must be divided into several marked epochs. The text says the last epoch must commence with the introduction of carriages hung wholly on elliptic springs, about 1805, by Mr Obadiah Elliott.
The text says that ancient America, especially the civilised Mexico, tells us nothing, that from China and Japan we gain next to nothing, and that only a strip of North Africa contributes to the history of wheels. The text says that in the year 1769 the Society of Arts had given sixty guineas to Mr T. Hunt for improvements in tyring wheels, and twenty guineas to Mr Joseph Jacob, of St. Mary-axe, for improved coach springs. The text says Mr Jacob wrote a clever treatise on carriages in 1773. The text says M. Dupont is educating the artistic taste of every manufactory which procures his aid, by means of drawings described as quite works of art.
