About this book
Castilian Days is a book by John Hay, with illustrations by Joseph Pennell. A note says that in this holiday edition a few chapters that appeared in the original edition have been omitted. The contents list chapters titled, among others, Madrid al Fresco, Spanish Living and Dying, and Tauromachy.
A passage on the old-fashioned Tertulias of Spain says the leading families of each little circle have one evening a week on which they remain at home, with conversation and music and dancing. The text says that Velazquez never knew the storms of adversity. The text speaks of a father who had been married twice before he entered the priesthood.
