About this book
Cecilia says that neither her actions nor her person will be sufficiently known to attract public observation. Mr Belfield takes that answer as an intention to defy worldly maxims and follow her own understanding. Mr Monckton argues that mixing with the world brings a need to accommodate oneself to established customs. Mr Monckton calls departures from common rules admirable when they proceed from genius, but argues that the scarcity of genius makes such pleas rarely applicable.
Mr Belfield rejects the beaten track for a person of ability and spirit. Mr Delvile insists that, whatever Belfield may be, he is known not to be a man of rank.
