About this book

Russian and Chinese imperial expansion provides a starting point for Adeeb Khalid's history of Central Asia, which follows the region into the present. He examines trade, ideas and political change across its nomadic and settled populations. Comparisons between Soviet and Chinese Communist rule show how governments managed cultural differences, while the discussion of Xinjiang places it within the region's wider history.
