Adeeb Khalid is a historian of modern Central Asia, Islam, empire, and Soviet rule. He is the Jane and Raphael Bernstein Professor of Asian Studies and History at Carleton College, where he has taught since 1993. Central Asia traces the region from eighteenth-century imperial expansion through Russian and Chinese conquest, Communist transformation, and the independent states that emerged after 1991. Published by Princeton University Press, the book brings nomadic and settled societies into a connected account rather than treating the region as a remote margin. Khalid's earlier scholarship examined Muslim cultural reform, religion after Communism, and the making of Uzbekistan, giving this broader history a deep foundation in the region's political and intellectual life.
