About this book
Charlemont, subtitled Or, The Pride of the Village. a Tale of Kentucky, is by William Gilmore Simms. The contents list names, among others, chapters called The Strong-Minded Woman, The Toad on the Altar and The Good Young Man in Meditation. The dedication to the Hon. James Hall, of Cincinnati, says that the story of Charlemont and its Sequel Beauchampe are respectfully inscribed by their author.
The uncle asks Warham whether he sees the sunlight to which he points, a sort of rosy haze on the hill-side, which seems to him eminently beautiful. Warham answers that sunlight is, he thinks, of very little importance to professional men, unless as a substitute for candles. The text says that a woman put her chamber in nice order and had a tolerably handsome collection of books for a private library in our forest-country.
