About this book

The introductory sketch says Pembroke was originally intended as a study of the human will in several New England characters. The sketch places these characters in different phases of disease and abnormal development. The sketch also mentions a theory that its cure depended entirely upon the capacity of the individual for a love which could rise above all considerations of self. The sketch calls Barnabas Thayer the most pronounced exemplification of this theory.

One scene has Cephas Barnard speak in a voice as sudden and gruff as a dog's bark, and Cephas tells Charlotte to light the candle. Another scene has Barnabas Thayer come out of his house and stroll slowly across the road one Sunday evening, about four months after the cherry party. The scene is very still, with nobody in sight on the road in either direction, except for the vibrating calls of the hidden insects.
