About this book
Charlotte Brontë and Her Circle is by Clement K. Shorter, dated 1896. In the preface Shorter says the larger part of the book is new material on the Brontë story, and thanks the Rev. Arthur Bell Nicholls for allowing letters concerning his marriage to be published after forty years of silence.
One passage discusses Mrs. Gaskell's biography of Charlotte Brontë and quotes her words, "I did so try to tell the truth." It also mentions Branwell and the belief that a woman lay behind his ruin. A letter in the book mentions a possible visit to Scarborough, a plan for the Sussex Coast, a medical man's doubts and papa's health. The volume also prints the will of Charlotte Nicholls, with Patrick Brontë and Martha Brown as witnesses.
