About this book
Letters and classroom memories give Frederika Macdonald the evidence for a dispute over Charlotte Brontë's literary development. Published in 1914, this study examines Brontë's time at the school in the Rue d'Isabelle and her connection with Monsieur and Madame Heger. Macdonald challenges the account in Mrs. Gaskell's biography, arguing that careful attention to documents should precede judgments about a writer's feelings. She connects that argument with the treatment of personal experience in Villette and The Professor.
Alongside her discussion of Brontë's letters, Macdonald draws on her own knowledge of Monsieur Heger as a teacher. Her portrait presents a man absorbed in literary expression, whose enthusiasm for language shapes the way he responds to his pupils. Biography, literary criticism and personal reminiscence meet in an account of attachment and artistic growth. Readers interested in how literary lives are reconstructed can examine Macdonald's evidence and her insistence on separating historical people from their fictional counterparts.
