About this book
Fred. W. Burgess writes about household curios and the collector who hunts for them. One passage describes the oak chest of medieval England, with its heavy lock and bolts, and the dower chest a bride brought to her husband with linen, clothing and jewels. It also mentions the iron box in the Public Record Office where the Domesday Book was kept for many centuries.
Other passages turn to Eastern curios. Embroidered shoes from China, Persia, Turkey and India are described, among them slippers of red leather, silk, satin and velvet embroidered with silver and sequins and Indian shoes stitched with silver thread. Elsewhere the text covers leather wallets, purses and girdles, Sunderland jugs, silver posset cups and early Staffordshire drinking cups with brown and yellow slip decoration.
