About this book
Chats on Old Lace and Needlework is a book by E. L. Lowes. A section headed A BRIEF HISTORY OF LACE says that, in the tombs of ancient Egypt, garments have been discovered with the edges frayed and twisted into what we may call a primitive lace.
The text also says that, possibly owing to the exquisite fragility of Lace, there is a complete absence of data earlier than that of Egypt. The book lists a Stuart glove, a Stuart mirror frame, a Stuart book cover and Queen Elizabeth's pocket-book. The text says some portion of the Worcester fragments may be seen in the South Kensington Museum. Under the heading CONCLUSION, the text says needlework as a national art is as dead as the proverbial door-nail.
