About this book
The use of money becomes a test of faith in Anthony Norris Groves's religious tract. Taking Christ's command against storing up earthly treasure as his starting point, he argues for dedicating wealth, time and abilities to Christian service. He reads the Gospel teachings alongside the example of the apostles. His interpretation reaches beyond charitable gifts from an income to the use of capital and estates themselves.
In the preface to the second edition, dated 1829, Groves addresses objections about the Church's influence, provision for children and the sale of property. His discussion connects family example with religious conviction, asking how everyday spending communicates the strength of a parent's faith. Readers interested in Christian stewardship will find a demanding argument for daily dependence on God and a close examination of the claims of comfort, inheritance and religious duty.
