About this book
During 1830 and 1831, Anthony Norris Groves kept a journal of missionary life in Baghdad as plague, flooding and siege unsettled the city. His record places Christian belief beside immediate worries about health, family and survival. An introductory essay presents the account as testimony to faith under pressure, while the journal itself gives personal detail to the wider history of a community facing several crises at once.
As the floodwaters fall, Groves hears that families are returning, often with only a few survivors. He records symptoms that remind him of his wife Mary's illness and considers what might happen to his three children if he dies. A later entry describes his fever easing and the comfort he finds in prayer. Readers interested in religious history or firsthand accounts of epidemic conditions will find a voice shaped by bereavement, parental concern and firm trust in divine care.
