About this book

A worn barrel-organ gives two lonely people something to hold on to in a dreary lodging-house. Old Treffy earns pennies by playing four familiar tunes in the streets, where impatient listeners often send him away. Upstairs, the same music comforts him. Christie, a boy grieving for his mother, slips to the attic door because one of those tunes recalls her singing. Their shared attachment to the music brings the child and the elderly player into one another's lives.

O. F. Walton's children's novel connects this friendship with poverty, practical care and Christian belief. A clergyman helps Treffy understand forgiveness through the example of accepting a gift, while Christie brings flowers and shares in the conversation. The religious teaching is explicit, and ordinary objects carry its meaning. Readers interested in Christian stories for children will find a tale that sets spiritual reassurance beside hunger, cold and the need for companionship.
