About this book
Eight-year-old Rosa Browning worries that her sick mother may be going away. Living in a poor tenement, she takes care of her mother, finds comfort in an elderly friend's violin songs and endures Mrs. Gray's sharp complaints. An errand to Lake Avenue brings her into conversation with a kind stranger on a streetcar. Rosa understands talk of heaven as a real destination and wants to know how much the fare will cost.
Anna Potter Wright builds this children's novel around Rosa's questions about the "beautiful land" and the Christian teaching offered in response. A later church scene places the child before a congregation divided by pride, sympathy and social standing. The pastor changes his service to explain salvation in language she can understand. Readers interested in religious stories for children will find a direct account of faith, poverty and the responsibility of adults toward a vulnerable child.
