About this book
The preface identifies the subject as the tragedy of the Western world-view and describes a dissatisfaction with histories of thought written merely as histories of philosophical systems. The discussion of law calls for human rights that protect existence and dignity against foreign violence while guaranteeing the greatest possible freedom for personality within a national body. The argument makes a new world-view the condition for rebuilding law after its collapse.
The discussion of reverence for life presents its spirit and temper as a force working effectively in every direction. The account of the Church's task calls for uniting people in elementary, thoughtful, ethical religiousness and says that task has hitherto been accomplished very imperfectly.
