About this book

Janice is almost finished for the evening when a single customer remains over a salad sandwich and tea in a small shop near Lawrence Avenue. Janice feels certain that she has never seen the man before that evening. Janice backs away from a gunman who conceals his weapon in his coat pocket and keeps it trained on her while urging her towards the kitchen.

The customer whose appearance Janice disliked returns through the back door, surprising her when she is about to scream. Rickey proposes collecting a car from a garage and driving along the north shore as a meal finishes with two pink frozen sorbets. Janice is caught up in the sight of beautifully dressed women and men in evening clothes, with music, flowers and laughter seeming like a delightful new world.
