About this book

Sandy is sitting at home, preoccupied with a father in hospital, when a call from an unfamiliar number breaks the evening. Ali Smith's contemporary novel opens with a narrator whose love of language has faltered under personal strain. Thoughts about myth, public wrongdoing and collective grief share space with an ordinary moment of waiting.

Ali Smith

Ali Smith was born in Inverness in 1962 to working class parents, and questions of class and of who counts as local run through her work. She read English at Aberdeen, started a doctorate on American and Irish modernism at Cambridge, and gave up lecturing at Strathclyde in 1992 through illness.
