About this book

The novel opens on a shrug: 'so?', the answer people gave when long-term residents were arrested or deported, when a government closed its own parliament, and when a continent burned. The narrator notes that millions did not shrug, and recalls marches, protests and voting.

Then the narrator describes an image from a film made in London about seventy years ago: a man carrying two suitcases on a narrow brick ledge.

Ali Smith

Ali Smith was born in Inverness in 1962 to working class parents, and questions of class and of who counts as local run through her work. She read English at Aberdeen, started a doctorate on American and Irish modernism at Cambridge, and gave up lecturing at Strathclyde in 1992 through illness.
