About this book
Conspiracy of Catiline and the Jurgurthine War presents an account of conspiracy whose argument lists Catiline's character, associates, supporters and resolution to subvert the government. The description of Catiline's circle includes people burdened by debts, crimes, poverty or guilty consciences, alongside others maintained by perjury or civil bloodshed.
The military account describes troops moving through Italy to Rhegium, Sicily and Africa, before Calpurnius invades Numidia and takes prisoners and towns. Jugurtha's emissaries offer bribes and point out the difficulties of the war, and the account says the commander's avarice easily altered his mind. The account names Scaurus as an accomplice and manager of schemes who, despite initial hostility to Jugurtha, was afterward swayed by a vast sum of money.
