About this book
A History of Rome to 565 A. D. is by Arthur E. R. Boak, Professor of Ancient History in the University of Michigan, and dates from 1921. Its preface says the sketch is meant mainly for introductory college courses in Roman history, and as a handbook for students of Roman life and literature, with a bibliographical note added.
The text is divided into numbered chapters. One passage covers Caesar's campaign in Africa: he besieges the seaport Thapsus, Scipio comes to its relief and is defeated in a battle near the town, and Caesar then returns to Rome to celebrate a triumph over Gaul, Egypt, Pharnaces and Juba. Another passage turns to Justin, who ruled for nine years, and to the general Vitalian, who held a consulship in 520. The bibliography lists works chapter by chapter, with extra titles on Caligula and Nero.
