About this book
The volume offers sketches of some eminent Cornish men and families. A quoted portrait places Sir Richard in the streets of Bideford, greeted by people of several occupations, and riding the moorland roads between his houses at Stow and Bideford. The portrait reports that people called Sir Richard stern and harsh to his sailors, but only when he saw among them a taint of cowardice or falsehood.
A description of African flora mentions cocoa-nut palms against the sky and dwarf date-palms with their foliage in the water. The description places pale blue kingfishers on young green trunks, watching for fish or wandering flies. The account says commerce with the rich interior of Africa now seemed practicable.
