About this book

Lives of the Engineers by Samuel Smiles carries the headings The Locomotive and George and Robert Stephenson. One passage, drawn from a brief summary of facts relating to the food supply of London, says that not less than 222,080 quarters of wheat were brought into London by railway in 1867, besides what was brought by sea.

Another passage says it may well be supposed that Mr. Stephenson’s time was fully occupied in superintending the extensive, and for the most part novel works, connected with the railway. A passage lists the works of the railway, including every bridge, from the simplest to the most complicated, iron girders, siphons, fixed engines and the machinery for working the tunnel at the Liverpool end. One passage says the colour and number of the bird’s eggs and the materials of their nests were described by George Stephenson so vividly that one of the party remarked he might have been one of the greatest naturalists.
