Cosmopolis, Volume 2, continues the 1892 novel by Paul Bourget (1852-1935), the French psychological novelist elected to the Académie française in 1894. Cosmopolis is set among the international colony of Rome, the cosmopolitan world of wealthy expatriates, and follows the interlocking passions of a cast drawn from across Europe and America: the Venetian-Polish Countess Steno, her American lover, the French novelist Julien Dorsenne who observes all, and the explosive Boleslas Gorka. Bourget uses the Roman setting to study his thesis that the cosmopolitan, cut off from the soil of race and tradition, becomes morally rootless. The novel was among his greatest international successes. Volume 2 carries the intrigue toward its duel and its catastrophes. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
