Critical Miscellanies by John Morley, Vol. I, Essay 2, is titled Carlyle. The contents list names, among others, Mr. Carlyle's influence, and degree of its durability, and his literary services. The contents list further names Coleridge, Byron and Goethe, among others.
The essay says it is one of Mr. Carlyle's chief and just glories that for more than forty years he has clearly seen the profoundly important crisis in the midst of which we are living. The essay says that Mr. Carlyle identifies the physical with the moral order, and confounds faithful conformity to the material conditions of success with loyal adherence to virtuous rule and principle. The essay remarks that a complex series of historic facts do not usually fit so neatly into the moral formula.
