About this book

On the Choice of Books is by Thomas Carlyle, with a life of the author. The contents list names, among others, an address delivered to the students of Edinburgh University on April 2, 1866, and a farewell letter to the students. Carlyle says in his Reminiscences that he was already getting his head a little up, translating Legendre's Geometry for Brewster.

The text describes Mr. Carlyle rising at once, shaking himself out of his gold-laced rectorial gown, leaving it on his chair and stepping quietly to the table. A speaker says he has not the honour of any personal acquaintance with Mr. Adam Black, late member for Edinburgh, but for fifty years has known him in the distance.
