About this book

Steinbeck's first novel is a swashbuckling account of the Welsh pirate Henry Morgan, tracing his rise from a farm boy dreaming of adventure to the ruthless buccaneer who sacked Panama, the fabled Cup of Gold. Loosely based on real history, the story follows Morgan across the Caribbean as ambition, greed, and a longing he cannot name drive him toward a prize that never satisfies. It is more romantic and less grounded than the California fiction that later made Steinbeck famous, yet its themes of restless desire and disillusionment already show. Readers curious about how a Nobel laureate began will find it revealing. Available here as a free PDF and EPUB.
