About this book
The Wild Geese is by Stanley John Weyman and appears as VOL. XX of The Works of Stanley J. Weyman. A scene has Uncle Ulick answer, parrot-like, that you must pay your dues. A wide brown basin, bog for the most part but rising here and there into low mounds of sward or clumps of thorn-trees, stretches away to the foot of the hills. One person is said to gaze with eyes which had been strained for years across the vast unbroken plains of Central Europe, the sandy steppes of Poland, the frozen marshes of Lithuania.
Companies of women and girls, close-hooded and shawled, halt before the house to raise shrill cries of welcome or, as they pass, stir the air with their wild Erse melodies. Tradition reported in the text that in old days a certain rock had been a pulpit, and that thence the Irish Apostle had preached to the heathen.
