About this book
Curiosities of Puritan Nomenclature is by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley. The book says Norwich contained 377 names, and that John engrossed no less than 128, William 47 and Thomas 41 of them. The book adds that nearly one-third of Englishmen were known either by the name of William or John about the year 1300.
The text quotes the words to his sonne What-God-will, six pound, thirteen shillings, fourpence, and calls the name a manifest translation of the early Christian Quod-vult-deus. The text calls Closland, or Crosland, the grandfather, evidently a Puritan with a horror of the Latin Vulgate, Latin Pope, and Latin everything. The author observes that Redemptus was less grotesque than Redeemed, and Renata than Renewed. A list of names with page numbers includes Stand-fast-on-high, Stedfast and Stepkin.
