About this book
A banker's last instructions turn his daughter's inheritance into a test of family trust. In George Manville Fenn's novel, Kate Wilton receives a fortune of one hundred and fifty thousand pounds, while her uncle takes responsibility for her care. Her father expects that money to attract calculating suitors and asks his brother to protect her interests at Northwood.
The story combines a love plot with the pressures of guardianship, money and dependence. Its opening moves from the banker's London deathbed to a country doctor's consulting room, where social manners and personal rivalries emerge through conversation. A later passage finds Kate unsettled in a fogbound house, recalling pressure to marry Claud and struggling to understand her surroundings. Readers interested in inheritance stories will find tension between family obligations, material advantage and a young woman's freedom of choice.
