About this book

Florence Aylmer comes home to Dawlish with her school friend Kitty Sharston and a firm intention to earn her own living. Her mother's tiny cottage offers an affectionate welcome, but talk of allowances and a wealthy aunt soon brings money into the conversation. Florence values her independence, while her mother still measures opportunities against the fortune held by another branch of the family.

L. T. Meade sets these domestic exchanges within a novel of social ambition, literary work and love. In a later scene, Maurice Trevor faces a generous offer from his benefactor, who also hopes he will marry an heiress. His insistence on honour and affection gives the financial bargaining a personal cost. Readers interested in women's prospects and the pressures of patronage will find those concerns expressed through lively family conversation and competing ideas of what makes a desirable future.
