Jerusha Abbott, the oldest orphan at the John Grier Home, is called into the office one Wednesday and told that a trustee who wants no thanks is sending her to college. His one condition is that she write him a letter every month, and he will never write back. All she ever saw of him was a long shadow thrown on a wall, so she calls him Daddy-Long-Legs. Jean Webster’s 1912 novel is told entirely in those letters, stick-figure sketches and all, as Judy discovers Latin, basketball, friendship, and how much of the world nobody ever told her about. It is funny, it moves fast, and the ending tends to stay with readers. Free PDF and EPUB editions are available here.
