About this book
Daphne, subtitled An Autumn Pastoral, is by Margaret Pollock Sherwood. Daphne reads slowly from a tiny Italian-English phrase-book, and old Giacomo gazes at her with questioning eyes. Assunta and Giacomo argue over whether to have macaroni or roast chicken and salad for dinner.
Daphne sits on a great gray stone among the sloping hills, and below her the Campagna stretches out, with dome and tower near the line of shining sea meaning Rome. Daphne walks with heavy feet and downcast eyes, and when her knees suddenly become weak she sits down on a stone and covers her face with her hands. A man who rises abruptly and holds out his hand says that his gospel is still the gospel of joy, and Daphne realizes that he is gone.
