About this book
Anne Stephens, in her early forties, looks back along the path of her life and remembers some half a dozen incidents. In one she is small enough to sit under the window bench in her father's workshop, content in the smell of fresh paint and sawdust, until her mother calls her into the house. Her father says that the only joy that is good is the joy of making things.
Another memory is a night when Anne wakes to her mother sobbing and listens at the head of the stairs to her mother and her oldest brother John, who says he is bringing his sweetheart home for dinner. In another scene Anne looks through the pigeonholes of her daughter Margaret's desk and finds letters addressed to Miss Margaret Duffy from Freda Innsmere at Truesdale Camp, until Margaret turns with a cry.
