About this book

Matthew Towns, a gifted Black American barred from finishing his medical training by racism, abandons the United States for Europe. In Berlin he meets Kautilya, an Indian princess at the center of a secret alliance uniting the world's colonized peoples against white domination. What follows is part political manifesto and part sweeping romance, as Matthew is pulled into conspiracy, disillusionment, and a love that crosses continents. Du Bois wove pan-African and anti-colonial ideas into a deliberately melodramatic plot, and he named this his own favorite among his books. Uneven and strange by turns, it remains one of the most ambitious literary experiments to come out of the Harlem Renaissance. Free to download as a PDF or EPUB.
