About this book

Leaving a Boston theatre after Romeo and Juliet, an unnamed narrator crosses the Common on a quiet June night. Familiar streets look strange in the gaslight, and his thoughts turn to unhappy marriages and the possibility of different pairings. That reflection becomes a literary fantasy in which Shakespeare's characters meet across the boundaries of their plays.

Thomas Bailey Aldrich gives the imagined encounter a comic, conversational form. Hamlet's grief at Elsinore supplies one thread, while Mercutio brings him to a masked gathering in the Capulet house. There he meets Juliet, whose lively conversation answers his melancholy. The short story draws its interest from this unlikely meeting and from a theatre lover's wish to alter the emotional direction of a familiar tragedy.
