About this book
A traveller boards the cargo ship Vesta, whose small Terran captain is proud in black leather. War is about to break out in the Procyon sector, and the narrator must get back to Terra, yet Haalvordhen, a telepathic Theradin from Samarra, has reserved a place on the ship, which has only one passenger cabin. The captain explains that a cargo ship may not discriminate between its passengers.
In the pages sampled an alien with discoloured patches about its throat and head is fitted with suction tubes and cushioning devices, and it asks the narrator to unfasten them. It speaks aloud with great effort, and the narrator says that the telepathic touch is hard to bear. In another passage a thought is exchanged without words, beginning with the name 'Haalvordhen!'.
