About this book

French and Middle English stand alongside one another in William Caxton's collection of everyday phrases and dialogues. Adapted from an earlier French and Flemish phrase book, the work brings language learning into a world of trades, payments and civic business. A falconer has birds to sell at Montpellier, a cooper makes and repairs barrels, and a toll payer plans to challenge an excessive charge. These small scenes give practical vocabulary a setting in people's working lives.

Henry Bradley's edition supplies an introduction, notes and word lists, tracing the text's sources and the influence of Flemish on Caxton's English. His discussion of unusual translations makes the book useful for readers interested in how languages meet and change. The paired passages also offer a close view of older spelling and expression, with the details of medieval occupations providing something concrete to follow through the unfamiliar words.
