About this book
William Holmes McGuffey's Fourth Eclectic Reader includes drills on the sounds of English: word lists for many sounds, groups such as aspirates, and combined sounds like br, bl and dr with sample words. Lessons are numbered in Roman numerals, and short notes explain hard words.
Lesson L, The Right Way, is adapted from a story by Frank H. Stockton, and a note beforehand gives his birth at Philadelphia in 1834. In it little Jenny Murdock tells Andrew that the bridge is gone, because it has been pulled to the other side and she cannot get home. In another lesson a flood sweeps a horse and rider through brushwood, floating logs and timbers of a dam, and Gilbert could never distinctly recall the first few seconds.
