About this book
A steel pen, a silver spoon and a load of coal become starting points for understanding industrial work in Eva March Tappan's children's reader. Published in 1916, the book follows materials taken from the earth into the objects and buildings people use. Its chapters cover coal, quarry stone, bricks, precious metals, iron, copper, aluminum, oil and salt. The opening descends into a coal mine, describing the miners' lamps, roof supports, loaded cars and machinery that transformed the work.
Tappan connects large operations with familiar details. In the section on silver, she explains why tableware tarnishes, how alloys give the metal strength and how electrical plating coats a spoon. Her preface treats industry as a web of shared labor, linking workers and distant places. Readers interested in early industrial education can find both concrete explanations and a record of how a writer of the period presented mining and manufacturing to children.
