About this book
Elements of Plumbing is by Samuel Edward Dibble, head of sanitary equipment and installation at Carnegie Institute of Technology. The preface says the author had in mind the needs of young men having no technical instruction who are anxious to become proficient in the art of Plumbing. The preface adds that each exercise is minutely described and illustrated.
The history of tubs is told from the first tubs used in this country, of wood lined with copper or zinc, to the iron enamelled and earthenware tubs that replaced them. The book goes over plans in detail, noting in Fig. 46 the number and kinds of fixtures to be drained and bringing out the reasons for fittings and traps and the arrangement of the piping. Rules state that overflow pipes from fixtures must in all cases be connected on the inlet side of the traps, and that all traps must be substantially supported and set true with respect to their water levels.
