About this book
Reporting from western and southern Ireland during the winter of 1880-81, Bernard H. Becker records a countryside caught in disputes over land and rent. His letters for the Daily News take him through Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Cork and Kerry. At the outset, warnings heard in Dublin meet a more complicated picture in the districts themselves, where local conversations and market activity challenge some of the rumours reaching the capital.
Alongside accounts of landlords, tenants and land meetings, Becker describes the practical details of travel. An icy road delays his arrival in Ennis, while a trip along the Fergus brings him close to the Clare land reclamation works. Differences in government loan rates become part of that account. Readers interested in Irish social history can follow how a visiting reporter connects political unrest with streets, waterways, working conditions and everyday encounters. His observations also reveal the assumptions he brings to the people he describes.
