About this book
Drake, Nelson and Napoleon by Walter Runciman is presented as a collection of studies. The account of Hawkins describes an agreement pardoning his piracy in the West Indies and other places, together with the grant of a Spanish peerage. The narrator imagines an apparently indifferent request for the release of sailor prisoners from the Inquisition galleys, and says that the request was granted.
The discussion of naval equipment credits the British with an ability to guard against deficiencies in the outfit of their ships. The narrator says that he has thought it appropriate to add The Battle of Copenhagen, The Death of Nelson, and The Arethusa. The added pieces are described as sea songs rather than sailors' songs, and as being of distinctly greater merit than the doggerel rhymes.
